Many endurance sports focus on the individual. But adventure racing requires a team approach. On this week’s Endurance Planet Hour, we focus on the sport of adventure racing with the help of guests Robyn Benincasa of Project Athena and Mike Chastaine of the Dirty Avocados. Benincasa is a former world champion who is now part of a team that is helping others embrace challenge in sports after tragic or medical setbacks. Chastaine is a husband and father of three who will be celebrating his 50th birthday with his team by racing for 700k in Australia.
On this week’s Endurance Planet Hour we talk with the director of Bicycle Dreams, The Race Across America, Stephen Auerbach. This is a movie about men and women who push their bodies to the limit on a daunting, 3,000-mile odyssey. I recently posted the question on the Endurance Planet Facebook fans page, “If you could replace one of the disciplines of a triathlon, what would it be? And what would you replace it with?” A couple respondents told us about triathlons they had done which incorporated paddling instead of swimming. Sounds like an adventure race. And, lest we forget, while triathlon is the most popular multisport activity, adventure racing is multisport as well…and many of those who have tried it, become hooked for life.
