Jeff Hardisty’s father had died of heart disease at the age of 46, so when Hardisty himself toed the line of the Seattle Marathon at 46, he had a lot on his mind. Jeff had undergone heart surgery just months prior, but had his doctor’s ok to attempt 26.2. This week’s Marathon & Beyond Monday is Hardisty’s account of that day.

The Western States Endurance Run is one of the oldest ultra trail events in the world and certainly one of the most challenging. But the 100-miler scheduled for June 26th is also, essentially, a research lab. Dr. Marty Hoffman is the medical director for Western States.
